Bitcoin Dominance Chart – Live BTC.D and Today’s Reading
The live bitcoin dominance chart below shows the ticker BTC.D from TradingView (full name: Market Cap BTC Dominance, %). It measures bitcoin’s market cap as a percentage of the total crypto market cap, updated in real time. Bookmark this page to check the reading whenever you need it. That way, you can quickly see whether bitcoin or altcoins deserve the spot on your investment radar.
How to read the bitcoin dominance chart
The number is bitcoin’s slice of the crypto pie. For example, if the reading is 60%, bitcoin makes up 60% of the value of the entire crypto market. Everything else (Ethereum, stablecoins, and thousands of altcoins) makes up the other 40%.
Because the chart tracks a percentage rather than a price, it shows how bitcoin is doing relative to the rest of the market. When the line rises, bitcoin is gaining market share. When it falls, altcoins are gaining market share. Either can happen while the whole market moves up or down in dollars.
So the chart won’t tell you whether bitcoin is going up or down. It tells you whether you’d rather have been holding bitcoin or altcoins.
Using the bitcoin dominance chart
Money in crypto tends to flow into bitcoin first. Once investors bank some profits there, some of it can travel down the risk curve into altcoins. The dominance chart lets you watch that rotation as it happens. Crypto’s famous “altseasons” showed up here as steep, fast drops in the dominance.
One caveat: a falling dominance doesn’t tell you which altcoins are winning. Sometimes it’s a blanket altseason, where most of the market beats bitcoin. Other times, a few big movers do the heavy lifting while the rest go nowhere. So a dropping BTC.D line isn’t a green light to buy any altcoin. For a clearer picture, chart your chosen altcoin against bitcoin (like ETHBTC for Ethereum).
You can also apply technical analysis to the BTC.D line itself, just like any other chart. And because the dominance behaves differently at different points in the cycle, it pairs well with our market cycle guide.
As usual, none of this is investment advice. To learn more about how to use bitcoin dominance in your crypto strategy, check out our What is Bitcoin Dominance (BTC.D) guide.
